How to Tie a Men's Bowtie
The bowtie originated in France in the 17th Century and was used to keep the collar of suit shirts closed. Follow this traditional fashion and finish off your tuxedo with a bowtie for a polished effect. A bowtie done incorrectly looks sloppy and unkempt. Place the bowtie around your neck. Make the left end of the tie 1 1/2-inches longer the right end. Fold the longer end over the shorter end. Pull the longer end up through the loop forming a single knot around your neck.

Create a bow loop with the shorter end of the tie by folding it in half with the end of the loop facing toward the right. Arrange the loop over the single knot, underneath the chin. Place the long end of the tie over the bow loop.

Hold the bow loop and the long end of the tie with the right hand. Fold the end of the long tie piece on itself. Pull the long end of the tie towards the right, underneath the first bow loop.

Tighten both ends of the loop with both hands and adjust the knot so it faces in the center of the shirt.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure both bow loops are even with each other.
Practice creating a bowtie a few times before your event.
