How to Update Alltel Phone Codes
Cell phones are programmed using a series of codes to allow them to access a provider network's most recent features, preferred roaming lists (PRL) and program updates. Providers, like Alltel, use over-the-air programming to update Alltel phone calls. This allows users to dial a special number from their handsets and have the updates done automatically. Alltel also provides an option to download updates from their site and to use the computer to update the needed codes.

Update the Preferred Roaming List (PRL)

Power on the phone. Make sure that the phone is not roaming but in a direct Alltel service area. If roaming, wait to perform the update until back in an Alltel coverage area.

Dial *228 and press "Send."

Wait for the confirmation screen that the update has been successful and the phone call to automatically terminate. This can take several minutes.

Turn the phone off and back on again if it doesn't do this automatically.

Power on the phone and make sure it is in an Alltel service area and not roaming. If roaming, wait until back in a coverage area before proceeding.

Dial *22896 and press "Send." Wait for the prompt that says the update has been successful.

Turn the phone off and then back on.

Log on to the Internet and go to the Alltel Software Download page.

Select the operating system of the computer the software will be downloaded to, the type of device to be updated (Phone) and the model phone and press "Submit."

Follow the instructions on screen to download the software updates. Select "Run" when prompted after the program is dowloaded and follow the screen prompts to complete the installation.

Turn the phone on and connect the phone to the computer via a USB data cable or through a Bluetooth connection when prompted by the installed Alltel software.

Follow the screen prompts to complete updating the phone. Disconnect the phone when instructed. Turn the phone off and then on again.

Tips & Warnings
If the update does not work call Technical Support at 1-800-alltel1. Select option three for assistance from the Alltel phone.
Do not update the codes if roaming, many carriers use the *228 number to update PRLs and this could cause billing problems if the wrong carrier list is received.
