How to Start Raising Highland Cattle

How to Start Raising Highland Cattle thumbnail
Shaggy, longhorned Highland cattle are beloved by farmers around the world.

Highland cattle are a sturdy, long-haired breed that originated in Scotland, capable of thriving in chilly weather and converting food most cattle cannot eat into lean high-quality beef. They're also prized for their strong maternal instincts, generally good temper and long lives. Highland cattle were first imported into the United States in the late 19th century to improve American cattle strains. They're considered a good choice for small herds and less-than-ideal ranching conditions.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate your local farm bureau or cooperative extension and the nearest regional chapter of the Highland Cattle Association to determine exactly how many head you can maintain on the amount of land you have available.

    • 2

Decide what type of cattle operation you want to undertake. It is possible to purchase an entire herd, a few calves, yearlings or pregnant cows.

    • 3

Prepare your pasture area. You will want sturdy fencing around the perimeter and some type of shelter for supplies. Although Highlands are a tough breed, you may wish to provide a walk-in shelter they can access on the nastiest days. Make sure fresh running water will be available at all times.

    • 4

Locate and contact the nearest large-animal veterinarian. A vet experienced with the breed may have valuable advice to offer that's specific to your area. The vet can also tell you what to look for in a healthy animal.

    • 5

Highland cattle can be purchased at auctions or from individual breeders, many of whom advertise online through the breed associations. Make sure you understand all the terms of the sale.
