How to Use Ohm Car Subwoofers on a Home Stereo

Speakers that are used in a car subwoofer or for a home stereo are essentially the same. The differences include the types of connection terminals that are used and the impedance. Typically, a home speaker is 8-ohms and a car speaker is 4-ohm or 8-ohm. This means that impedance of the speaker needs to match that of the stereo. However, connecting the subwoofer requires the correct type of speaker cable.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the terminal connections on the car subwoofer. Determine the type of connection that is on the subwoofer. Most car subwoofers use an RCA connection terminal or speaker wire terminals.

    • 2

Connect the positive speaker wire on the RCA conversion cable to the red terminal on the back of the subwoofer.

    • 3

Connect the negative speaker wire on the RCA conversion cable to the black terminal on the back of the subwoofer.

    • 4

Run the audio cable to the location of the stereo.

    • 5

Plug the RCA conversion cable into the "Subwoofer" port on the stereo.

    • 6

Repeat this process if you have an additional subwoofer to connect.

    • 7

Turn on the stereo to test the subwoofer connection.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your subwoofer has an RCA terminal connection you can use a single RCA audio cable between the subwoofer and the stereo

  • Use RCA couplers to extend the length of the RCA conversion cable if it is too short.
