Water aerobics can be an effective way of toning the body.

Water aerobics, sometimes called aqua aerobics, is a fun and effective form of exercise. It appeals to people who enjoy swimming or just being being in the pool. Music is usually an integral part of the aqua exercise workout, helping to motivate the class and adding an element of exhilaration. The water adds resistance to the routine, helping with toning and flexibility, and also supports the body. This makes water aerobics suitable for people who suffer from muscle problems or arthritis, as the water takes the strain and the person does not suffer aching muscles and joints. Several tips can help aqua exercisers stay warm in the water.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear a swimming cap, as a considerable amount of the body's heat escapes through the head. Some people find wearing a wetsuit provides insulation and keeps them warmer, but this is a matter of personal preference. Have a cool to fairly warm shower before you enter the pool. This will help acclimatize your body to the pool temperature.

    • 2

Put your best effort into the warm-up routine. This usually involves walking on the spot, with perhaps some arm movements. Exaggerate your movements throughout the whole routine, paticularly if you begin to feel cold. A good instructor should intersperse more rigorous exercise with slower movements. Start your routine at chest level in the pool, with your arms over the surface of the water.

    • 3

Move between the shallower and deeper depths of the pool to help maintain your body temperature. if there is a break in the session, use this time to swim a little to maintain your temperature. Use the music to enter into the spirit of the class and keep moving. At the end of the session, have a warm shower and dress appropriately before returning home for a warm drink.

Tips & Warnings

  • The instructor and managers of the pool should ensure that the water and changing rooms are heated adequately. You should draw any problems to their attention.
