How to Kill Germs with UV Lights

How to Kill Germs with UV Lights thumbnail
Ultraviolet light has a wavelength shorter than that of visible light but longer than that of X-rays.

Germs are all around us, so keeping our homes clean is a necessity for a safe environment. There are many cleaners out there that kill bacteria, but ultraviolet (UV) lights are known to kill up to 99.9 percent of them as well as viruses. They kill the germs' DNA, which helps to sanitize the area. In addition, using UV light is eco-friendly and safe. You can purchase these lights as vacuums, wands, sweepers and for toothbrushes, as well as find them in water purifiers and humidifiers. All you need to do is pass the light over the designated area for the recommended time and you're done. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

      Turn the UV light on.

    • 2

Hold a wand no closer than half an inch from a surface. Pass the light slowly over the area for 10 seconds, covering about a foot of the surface. The closer the light is to the surface, the more intense it will be, resulting in a more powerful cleaning.

    • 3

Push sweepers and floor vacuums slowly over a floor or other surface. Place a bed vacuum on a mattress and move it with a slow and steady motion.

    • 4

Place a toothbrush in a sanitizer after you have used and rinsed your brush. Turn the sanitizer on and keep the brush in the sanitizer for the recommended time, about 6 minutes.

Tips & Warnings

  • For beds, start in the corner and clean one side first, then the other. Try also to clean both sides of the mattress.

  • Never leave products unattended while they are on and keep them away from water or areas with a lot of moisture. Always read manuals and keep lights away from eyes and skin.
