How to Make a Coin Come Out of Your Ear

How to Make a Coin Come Out of Your Ear thumbnail
Pull a coin from behind your ear in five steps.

The coin behind the ear trick is one of the first feats of magic an amateur must accomplish. Mastering this trick will mean that you've mastered two of the most important tools a magician must possess: sleight of hand and performance. To leave your audience with dropped jaws, you have to be able to hide the coin properly within your hand and make the audience believe what you want them to believe. Practice these few steps and your audience will soon be asking, "How did you do that?"

Instructions

    • 1

Find the smallest coin you have. The smaller the coin, the easier it will be to hold between your fingers and hide from your audience.

    • 2

Hold your hand up with your palm upwards. Take the coin and place it between your index finger and your middle finger near the base of the two fingers. Hold the coin between your two fingers and avoid any part of the coin being visible when you show the back side of your fingers. You'll want to complete this step before you approach your audience.

    • 3

Look at the back side of your fingers and position them until it looks like you're holding nothing. Hold your other hand up beside it so that both hands look like they are positioned in the same way. Have the coin positioned between your fingers and hidden before you approach your audience.

Choose an audience member. Place the volunteer in front of you so that your back is to the rest of the audience. Show the chosen volunteer and the audience the back of your hands, moving them back and forth, and paying special attention not to reveal the coin that is between your fingers.

Move your hand smoothly to the volunteer's ear with the back of your hand still to the audience, and quickly roll the coin with your thumb so that it appears between your thumb and middle finger. Show the coin to the volunteer and the audience. This step will take the longest to accomplish as you'll have to practice quickly moving the coin from between your index and middle fingers to the tips of your thumb and middle finger until it appears the coin appeared from behind the ear.
