How to Study in England

How to Study in England thumbnail
England is the country with the second-highest number of foreign students.

England offers a wide variety of academic programs for international students. Studying in England carries a certain amount of prestige and has long been the goal of overseas students, particularly those from former colonies. Taking a summer course or earning a degree in the mother country is possible if you do your homework. Whether you want to attend a secondary-level school or do your doctoral studies at Cambridge, the paperwork and visa requirements are similar. A primary consideration is that you speak English well.

Instructions

    • 1

Do your research. Decide if you want to study at Oxford, at Queen Mary -- University of London or at the London School of Economics. Rank your first, second, third, fourth and fifth choices. Apply to all of them for conditional acceptance.

    • 2

Start well in advance -- at least a year before -- you want to begin your studies in England. Talk to people who have studied in England and ask them how long it took to process their paperwork.

    • 3

Prepare your applications and make copies of supporting documents -- transcripts, test results, letters of support -- and mail them to the institutions of your choice. Send the applications by registered mail if in doubt about delivery.

    • 4

Arrange to take any tests -- such as the IELTS or TOEFL -- that you need to be admitted to the institution where you want to study. Hire a tutor, focus and work hard, because without passing the test, you won't be able to study in England if you aren't a native speaker.

    • 5

Apply for a student visa once you are formally accepted. Be prepared to prove that you can support yourself while studying in England. Provide bank statements, family letters of support or scholarship confirmations.

    • 6

Book your plane ticket as far in advance as you can to get the best deal. Ask if the school offers airport pickup for international students. Arrange where you are going to stay for the first few days after you arrive.

    • 7

Pay tuition fees, dormitory costs and meal plans as required.
