How to Boost Your Computer's Volume
Computers don't always come with sound that meets your needs, and making the sound louder isn't always an intuitive procedure. Increasing the volume on your computer can usually be done by tweaking software settings that are part of the operating system. Adding a pair of high-quality external speakers to your computer or even changing the sound card also are options for a number of desktop and laptop computers.

Adjusting Windows Settings

Look for a speaker icon in your Windows tray on the lower right side of your screen. Click on it and adjust the slider if it's not at maximum volume.

Go to the "Start" button in the lower left corner of your computer screen if you don't have a speaker icon in your Windows tray. Click on the "Control Panel" option.

Select the "Hardware and Sound" option. Click on "Sound," then "Adjust System Volume."

Use the slider to increase the volume to your liking. Close the dialog box.
Installing External Speakers

Determine where your sound card is located on your computer. It usually will have a plug for connecting speakers.

Use an appropriate speaker for your computer. Check the speaker box before buying it to make sure it's compatible.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions to install the speakers. This generally will require plugging one or two cables into the sound card connections. You may also need to plug the speakers into an electrical outlet.

Look at your computer manufacturer's website to find a compatible sound card.

Follow the instructions to install the sound card. This will usually be much easier on a desktop than a laptop. You may need a screwdriver to remove parts of your laptop cover to replace the sound card. Most desktop computer replacements will usually simply involve removing and replacing a plug-in sound card.

Test the sound card before replacing the cover on your laptop or desktop. If it doesn't work, you may need to do some more troubleshooting. See the troubleshooting section of the sound card instructions or the manufacturer's website.
