How to Change the Fuel Pump on a Porsche 911
The 911 is a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car from German automaker Porsche. In production since 1964, the 911 has become one of the most well-known Porsches ever. The fuel pump on the 911 is responsible for delivering fuel to the engine and is located at the front of the car under the gas tank. Replacing the 911's fuel pump is a relatively straightforward task that can be done in a couple of hours with a few tools.
Things You'll Need
- Floor jack
- Jack stands
- Socket set and ratchet
- 2x vice grips

1
Change the fuel pump when the car is as low on fuel as possible. Drive it around until the fuel light is on. Park the 911 in a well lit, well ventilated area. Disconnect the battery cable that goes to the negative battery terminal.

2
Lift the front of the car with a floor jack and support it on jack stands. It is not necessary to remove the wheels when replacing the fuel pump. Remove the belly pan located directly under the gas tank. The pan is held on with four bolts that are removed with a socket and a ratchet. You will see the fuel pump under the belly pan.

Place a pair of vice grips on the fuel hoses that come out of the fuel pump on either side so that the lines are squeezed and no fuel will come out when the lines are disconnected from the fuel pump. Place a rag between the vice grips and the fuel lines if you are worried about damaging them.

4
Loosen the hose clamps that hold the fuel lines to the fuel pump with a screwdriver and pull the lines off of the fuel pump. Wipe up any spilled fuel. It is also recommended that you wear eye protection and rubber gloves at this point. Disconnect the electrical wires that plug into the fuel pump. These may be spade connectors that pull off, or the wires may be held on with small nuts that need to be removed with a wrench.
-
5
Remove the nuts on the clamp that holds the fuel pump in place. Set the clamp aside. Withdraw the fuel pump from the car and set it aside. Install the new pump by holding it in place while you install the bracket and tighten the nuts that hold the bracket in place.
-
6
Connect the electrical wires that go to the pump. Ensure that the rubber insulator that protects the wires is fully covering the wires. Slide the fuel lines onto the fuel pump. Tighten the hose clamps around the fuel lines. Remove the vice grips from the fuel lines.
-
7
Reconnect the battery. Start the engine to ensure that the fuel pump is functioning. Check the fuel pump and fuel lines for leaks. Reinstall the belly pan with the four bolts. Lower the car off of the jack stands and take a test drive to ensure that the pump is working correctly during normal driving.
