How to Troubleshoot an Aprilaire Model 550 Humidifier

Save

The Aprilaire humidifier model 550 is an automatic humidifier designed for residential or commercial use to increase moisture in the air. The unit is designed to resist rust or corrosion due to its non-metal construction and the humidifier should function well with regular cleaning and maintenance. However, if problems occur with the model 550 humidifier, some troubleshooting steps may help users find the source of the issue and potentially, determine a resolution, as well.

Things You'll Need

  • Water panel, if necessary
  • Water evaporator panel, if necessary

Overall Troubleshooting

  • Turn the control dial to "Test/Reset" if the Aprilaire humidifier is not working. This will reset the humidifier. Turn the unit thermostat to "Heat" in order to operate, and check the house's fuse or circuit breaker if the unit has no power at all. Reset or replace as needed.

  • Turn the control dial clockwise to increase the humidity if the humidifier does not seem to be providing enough moisture. Wait at least an hour for the moisture level to increase.

  • Turn the control dial counterclockwise to reduce the overall humidity setting if the air seems too moist or condensation develops on windows. Wait at least an hour for the moisture level to decrease.

Replace Water Panel

  • Replace the water panel if the "Water Panel" light is illuminated. Turn off the humidifier and the water supply and turn the integral bypass damper, located on the left side inside the front access cover, to "Summer." Press the latches on the cover to pull the front cover completely off.

  • Remove the plastic feed tube from the distribution tray, which is located at the top of the assembly. Grab the evaporator assembly at the top and pull it out carefully. Remove the distribution tray from the insert and lightly brush off any deposits from the liner.

  • Pull the water panel evaporator from the scale control insert tray inside the assembly. Brush the insert frame clean and replace with a new water panel evaporator and water panel, both of which are available from Aprilaire.

  • Replace the water panel back into the scale control insert, with the colored circle on top of the panel facing up. Snap the insert into position and re-install the assembly after fitting the drain into the drain hole at the bottom of the unit.

  • Turn the integral bypass damper back to its initial setting. Close the assembly, push the feed tube back into the distribution tray and close the front cover. Restore power and water supply before use.
