How to Clean Slippery Hardwood Floors

A slippery hardwood floor can be a safety hazard.

Whether your hardwood floor is slippery because of too much wax, or you spilled something on it, vinegar is a wonderful cleaning solution. Vinegar works by cutting grease and removing wax buildup, both of which can lead to slippery floors, while also removing odors, stains and preventing mildew from hardwood. If the wax or grease buildup is heavy, it may take several attempts to fully clean the floor.

Things You'll Need

• Dust mop
• Vinegar
• Bucket
• Soft mop

Instructions

1. Push a microfiber dust mop across the entire surface of the hardwood floor. This removes dirt and dust.

2. Mix 1/2 cup of vinegar to 1 gallon of warm water. Do not use hot water, as hot water can damage the hardwood.

3. Dip a soft mop, such as a microfiber mop or deck mop into the vinegar mixture. Wring the mop to remove excess moisture. Never use a soaking wet mop on the wood floor, as this can cause water damage. Beginning at the back of the room, begin mopping your floor, working your way forward. Allow the floor to air dry.

4. Rinse the mop and bucket. Fill the bucket with cool water. Beginning at the back of the room, begin mopping your floor, working your way forward. This rinses the floor free of vinegar. Allow the floor to air dry.

Tips & Warnings

• Once a slippery hardwood floor becomes wet, it becomes more slippery. Use extreme caution if walking on a wet, slippery hardwood floor.
