How to Make a Heart-Shaped Note Holder
Leaving a loved one a note on plain white paper delivers your message, but writing your note on plain white paper and tucking it into a soft red heart delivers your message with love. Make a heart-shaped note holder to remind the one who holds your heart of the love that comes with each and every note you leave.
Things You'll Need
- Two 7-by-7-inch pieces of white paper
- Scissors
- Pencil
- 1/2 yard of red cotton fabric
- Straight pins
- Needle
- Spool of red thread
- 1-inch piece of magnetic tape, optional
- Fabric glue, optional
- Rhinestones, optional
Instructions
-
-
1
Draw a 6-by-6-inch heart shape on your white paper. You will use this as a pattern.
-
2
Draw another corresponding heart on the second piece of paper, then cut the heart in half horizontally, making the cut approximately 2 inches down from the top of highest point on the heart shape.
-
-
3
Fold the fabric so you have a double thickness. Place the full heart pattern on top of the fabric, and pin it in place. Cut the fabric to the shape of the pattern. Remove the pins and lay the two fabric hearts aside.
-
4
Place the half-heart pattern over a third section of the fabric, first folding the fabric in half. Pin the pattern to the two pieces of fabric and cut the fabric to the shape of the half-heart. Note that the fold should be at the top of this piece after it is cut.

5
Lay one of the red fabric hearts on a table, right side facing up. Lay the pieces of the red fabric half heart over it, right side facing up. Lay the second red fabric heart on top of the half heart, right side facing down. Pin the pieces together with two pins.
-
6
Sew the heart shapes together, stitching along the edge. Holding the heart upside down, start your first stitch on the right side of the heart, about 4 inches down from the point, stitching down and around the top of the heart and across the other side. End your stitches near the bottom point of the heart but leave a small part unstitched. Backstitch over your first and last stitch to prevent unraveling.
-
7
Turn your heart to the right side, through the opening.
-
8
Fill your note holder with white stuffing to give it shape.
-
9
Slip stitch the opening closed with your needle and thread.
-
10
Glue the 1-inch magnetic strip to the back of the note holder if you want to put it on the refrigerator.
-
11
Slip a romantic memento in your heart-shaped note holder and put it where your loved one is sure to find it.

Tips & Warnings
Glue a rhinestone to the corner of your heart shaped note holder for a shimmering accent.
Spray a small piece of cardboard with your favorite perfume and slip it into the pocket of your note holder, along with your note if your message is for your lover.
Always keep pins far away from your machine's sewing needle to avoid striking any pins with the needle.
