How to Make Dollhouse Candles

How to Make Dollhouse Candles thumbnail
Cut off the bottom of a birthday cake candle, and use it in your dollhouse for a quick authentic wax candle.

It is possible to make wax dollhouse candles in the same way you make regular dip candles, by repeatedly dipping a wick into hot wax. Yet, instead of a candlewick, use embroidery thread. While these look authentic, wax dollhouse candles are fragile. They can melt, should the dollhouse get warm or the sunshine come streaming in, setting on the tiny wax objects, and cause a mess. Instead of wax and embroidery thread, use self-hardening clay and dental floss, for dollhouse candles that won't melt.

Instructions

    • 1

Break off a small piece of self-hardening clay in your hand. The amount will depend on how large you want your candle.

    • 2

Roll the clay between your fingers gently, forming the shape of the candle.

    • 3

Insert a sewing needle into the top of the candle, where the wick goes. Make a hole as deep as possible, and gently pull out the needle.

    • 4

Cut off a length of dental floss, at least 1 inch longer than the depth of the hole you made in the candle.

    • 5

Insert one end of the dental floss into the hole, as far as it will go. Twirl the dental floss between your fingers as you insert it, as this will help "screw" the floss into the hole.

    • 6

Roll the candle gently between your fingers, to press the hole shut, around the dental floss wick, holding it firmly in place.

    • 7

      Allow the clay to dry.

    • 8

Paint the dry clay with a layer of acrylic primer; allow the candle to dry. Paint the candle with acrylic or water-based paint.

    • 9

Trim the dental floss, making it the correct proportion for your candle.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never light the dollhouse candle.
