How to Make Recycled Magazine Coasters

Reuse and recycle your old magazines by making coasters for your home. You may find these coasters online for more than $20 a set; you can make your own for free if you have the magazines and glue, and are simple enough for children to make as well. You can make these coasters out of one magazine if it has a lot of pages. Make an entire set for your house in just one evening.

Instructions

    • 1

Tear out a magazine page. Make your tear as clean and straight as possible.

    • 2

Fold the paper in thirds with the torn edge folded inside. Fold the two edges to meet in the middle, then fold along the middle. It should now be a long thin strip.

    • 3

Roll the strip into a coil, then unroll. Place a thin line of glue along the inside roll and reroll it tightly. Hold it firmly for a few moments until the glue gets tacky and sticky. Place a rubber band around the roll, or use a clip to keep it secure while you prepare the second strip. The coil should be about a ½-inch thick at this point.

    • 4

Prepare a strip as in Step 3. Place a line of glue on one side of a second strip. Line up the end with the end of the first strip and wrap the strip around the first coil. Secure again with the rubber band while preparing the next strip. It should start to look like a flat disk, similar to a braided rug.

    • 5

Wrap strips around the coil until it is several inches across. Allow the glue to dry.

    • 6

Cover both sides and edges of the coaster with Mod Podge, using the paint brush. Allow it to dry thoroughly before using. The Mod Podge makes the coaster water resistant, so the sweating glasses won't ruin the coasters.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not wash the coaster or it will disintegrate.
