How to Build a Grain Mill

How to Build a Grain Mill thumbnail
The process of turning grain into flour requires simple grinding.

Grain mills, also known as flour mills, help you grind grain into flour, which you may use to make bread and other kinds of food essential to your health. You may also use this mill to grind corn into a starch. The process of grinding grain requires proper sanitation, so make sure to clean your working area before and after you grind. Making your own mill doesn't take a whole lot of time, as long as you have all the materials you need.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the steel pipe and cut it into three equal lengths of about 30 inches.

    • 2

File down the ends of the pipes to make them smooth.

    • 3

Wrap some slip-resistant tape around your pipes, covering them entirely.

    • 4

Gather the pipes together and tape the ends with duct tape or something similar.

    • 5

Place some grain into your can about one inch up from the bottom.

    • 6

Place the can on a flat surface and sit on a chair, holding the can between your feet.

    • 7

Grab the pipes and pound on the grain in short and rapid strokes for about four minutes. You start to notice the grain cracking and forming a fine powder.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a sieve to separate the fine flour from the grain's shells and other hard material.
