How to Store Raw Furs

Improper storage can ruin raw furs.

While many hunters and trappers clean and prepare their furs and hides right away, sometimes they need to store raw furs for long periods before they can be process them. Raw furs still have tissue and fat clinging to the underside. Store them properly so they don't begin to rot or stink, which can ruin the value of the fur.

Instructions

    • 1

      Hang the skin and allow the underside to dry so you don't get blood on the fur.

      Roll the fur up tightly to conserve space, fur side in.

    • 3

      Place the fur in a plastic bag. Label the bag with the type of fur, date you froze it, and the grade of fur.

    • 4

      Place the plastic bag in the freezer. The fur will store until you are ready to sell or process it.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have a large freezer, freeze the fur lying flat, instead of rolling it up.

  • Don't deflesh the fur until you are ready to stretch it.
