How to Paint Shadows With Acrylics

Painting on canvas makes for a wonderful hobby and is ideal for individuals looking to express themselves artistically. Adding shadows to your acrylic art is a way to add depth while giving your work a more realistic touch. Creating shadows for the subjects in your paintings can easily be done with a few different painting tools. Using acrylic paints is a quick way to get shadows, as they dry quickly and have an identical look to oil paint.

Instructions

Take a pencil and begin tracing a shadow onto your painted work. Keep in mind that many shadows are either directly below a subject or slightly behind a subject. Also consider if you want your subject's shadow to be small or large. Lightly begin drawing a shadow for your subject; it should not be exactly like your subject, but take on a fuzzy and narrow appearance to be realistic. If you are having a hard time coming up with a shadow draw an oval instead that is around the same size as your subject, which will be easier to draw and paint in.

Dip your paint brushes into a cup of water to soften the bristles. As you use a brush throughout your shadow painting make sure to clean it by swishing it around the water cup first, and then drying it on a clean paper towel.

Using your paint pallet, apply and then mix paints together that are your preferred shadow color. Consider using solid black for a denser look, or mix white with black to create a softer gray shadow. After you have mixed your colors together decide if you want your shadow effect to be faint or defined. If you choose to have a faint shadow appearance, then apply the paint color using a sea sponge. Carefully dip a small piece of sea sponge into the paint and lightly dab the penciled-in area until the shadow is filled slightly. Clean up and fill in narrow areas using a detail brush.

Choose to have a more dense shadow by painting the shadow in, fully using a color that has more black than white paint in it. Allow this to dry fully and fill in any necessary lines with extra paint using a detail brush for more precision. Let your painting dry completely, this should take no more than 15 minutes.
