How to Use a Muscle Stimulator on My Abs

How to Use a Muscle Stimulator on My Abs thumbnail
Abs stimulators work on the central and oblique abdominal muscles to increase tone.

Electrical muscle stimulators are used for muscle rehabilitation and the prevention of muscle atrophy and for physical therapy. Abdominal EMS belts that target the abs use phased electrical stimulation of the nerves to excite and inhibit contraction messages to the muscles. In this way the abs contract and relax over a predetermined time, toning the muscles by forcing them to work.

Instructions

    • 1

Assemble the belt according to the manufacturer's instructions if it does not have pre-positioned electrode pads.

    • 2

Charge the rechargeable battery unit according to the manufacturer's guide. Switch on the control unit attached to the abs belt to test that it works and the digital readout on the control unit is active and functioning correctly. Switch the control unit off.

    • 3

Take off your top so that it is easy to fit the belt in place. Stand up straight and place the belt snugly around your waist and clip into place at the back. The widest part of the belt centers over the belly button.

    • 4

Switch on the control unit and choose the setting advised by your health care professional. Start with a low setting to test your reaction to the muscle contractions and whether you experience discomfort, and adjust the level accordingly.

    • 5

Set the timer on the control panel for the therapy time suitable for your purpose. An abs belt session should be no longer than 30 minutes, once per day. Put your top back on and sit comfortably for the timer session to complete. Turn off the control unit and remove the belt once the session is over.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check that the EMS abdominal belt has FDA approval, as some non-approved products may be dangerous. Check with your health care advisor to make sure the unit is suitable for your use.

  • Read the manufacturer's instruction leaflet thoroughly and take note of any contraindications that may exist so that you fully prepare before using the product.

  • Do not use if you have a pacemaker.

  • Do not place an EMS device over cancerous skin.

  • Do not place the belt over broken skin.
