How to Cite From an Anthology in MLA Format

Anthologies contain multiple books or stories.

The MLA style of citing sources is used in academics, particularly the field of humanities, to provide a common format for references used to write a paper. The seventh edition of the MLA style guide contains instructions on how to cite works from an anthology as well as the anthology itself both in and at the end of a paper. Anthologies contain multiple works, such as stories or poetry, by one or more authors.

Instructions

1. Determine whether you need to cite the entire anthology or a specific work from the edition. You need only the author's name if citing a specific work. If citing more than one work from the anthology, use the format for citing the entire anthology.

2. Cite works from an anthology at the end of a paper with the format: Author's Last Name, Author's First Name. "Work Title." Anthology Title. Edition. Editor's Full Name. Publication Location: Publisher, Year. Page(s). Print. Replace the author's information with the editor's information if citing the entire anthology.

3. Refer to the work from an anthology within your paper using the format: (Author, page(s) ). Use the last name of the editor if citing the entire anthology. Use only the page numbers if you refer to the author or editor within the text of your paper.
