Directions for a Chinese Lantern

Directions for a Chinese Lantern thumbnail
There are many different styles of Chinese lanterns.

Chinese lanterns can give stale lighting a colorful, glowing effect. Large lanterns can be made as an addition to central light fixtures. Used for decoration, small Chinese lanterns are a unique and culturally diverse way to add some life to a dull room. They can also be displayed in a front or back yard, at a dinner party or even given as a gift.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the sides of one paper cup into strips. A smaller cup will require thinner strips, while a bigger cup should have wide strips. When in doubt, cut into 15 even strips. Leave the bottom of the cup intact.

    • 2

If the cups you are using provide a jutting rim, cut the rim off of the strips. Tips of strips should be flat.

    • 3

Cut the bottom off of the second cup. The cut should be 1/2 inch above the bottom to provide a bit of a lip. This will form the bottom of your lantern.

    • 4

Poke a hole in the middle of the cup's bottom. Do the same on the first cup.

    • 5

Cut a length of string or yarn appropriate for your decorating needs. Tie the end of the string into a knot, threading the other end through the bottom of the cup with the strips. Thread the string through the loose bottom of the second cup, so the lip is facing downward.

    • 6

Position the strips of the first cup around the bottom of the second cup. Tape the strips onto the lip around the sides with masking tape.

    • 7

Paint the cups, the bottoms and the masking tape. Red is a good color for traditional lanterns.

    • 8

Pull the string to tighten the lantern, pushing the cups into a circular lantern shape. Tie a knot above the second lid to secure lantern in place.

    • 9

Insert a flameless candle through open slots and hang where desired. If using a string of holiday lights, thread the lights through the Chinese lantern so that a light rests in the middle.
