How to Care for Fire Bellied Newts

How to Care for Fire Bellied Newts thumbnail
An aquarium can replicate a quiet pond.

Fire bellied newts, native to Japan, thrive in semi-aquatic surroundings as long as they have easy access to water. Their rich brown backs and bright red bellies allow for easy identification of the five-inch-long creatures. Fire bellied newts represent one of the larger species of amphibians, and many have a life span of nearly 20 years. Caring for these amphibians requires knowledge of their native habitat. Try to replicate their natural surroundings. They do well close to freshwater ponds, gentle streams and swampy areas.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up an aquarium to house up to eight fire bellied newts. Aquatic habitats contain gently filtered water. A semi-aquatic habitat offers both water and materials found in woodlands.

    • 2

Promote movement of chlorine-free water using an aquarium water pump. Use a water heater to keep the water temperature as close to 70 degrees as possible.

    • 3

Install as many live plants as it takes to fill half the area of the habitat. Plants that thrive underwater as well as those used in woodland settings need frequent replacing to maintain freshness.

    • 4

Provide the newts with fish, salamander and frog eggs. They relish such foods and sometimes even eat their own eggs.

    • 5

Feed newts in a semi-aquatic habitat with worms, insects and arthropods.

Tips & Warnings

  • An aquarium should be located away from drafts and radiators.

  • Do not use dog, cat, fish or other types of pet food for newts.
