1
Remove the securing screws, bolts or plastic parts to disconnect the shovel and shaft. Use a screwdriver or pliers to take out the bolts. Place the bolts or screws in a plastic bag or tool box. Keep them in a safe place: you will use these bolts again. Keep the shovel part in a safe place during the repair process. Recycle or hold onto the broken handle.

2
Visit a hardware or garden store for a new handle. Find a shaft with the same, or similar, length and width. Make sure it feels comfortable to grip and lift.

3
Attach the shovel and the replacement handle. Use the bolts leftover from the removal process to install the new handle.

4
Clean the new wooden handle. Use a stiff-bristled brush to smooth away any splinters left over from factory production. Sand the handle with a sheet of medium grit sandpaper.
-
5
Shape the replacement handle, so that the shovel fits securely to new handle, by filing or sanding both ends of the wood handle.

Tips & Warnings
If you want to repair a plastic handle instead, use a utility knife to carve off the burr, or rough edge, that forms on the end. Tighten a wobbly handle by pounding a large hex-head sheet-metal screw through the blade socket and into the handle so it fits securely.
