How to Bind a Book With Tape

How to Bind a Book With Tape thumbnail
Repairing the spine of your book lets you keep it for a long time.

Most tape made specifically for book binding is cloth or linen, although a plastic version is also on the market. When choosing a binding tape, you have many options to consider, such as width, thickness, color and even pattern. Schools and libraries regularly use book-binding tape to keep books in circulation. Taping the spines of books before they break is also a preventative preserving technique for your favorite titles.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the book's spine so you buy the right size tape. You'll need dimensions for the length as well as the width. Buy tape that is 1 inch wider than the spine and thick enough to hold the pages of the book.

    • 2

Open the book so the front cover and first page are touching. Apply a piece of tape to the center, and smooth it down. Repeat this for the back of the book.

    • 3

Cut a piece of tape for the spine of the book. If you're fixing a paperback, it will be the same length; if it's a hardcover, make the tape slightly longer than the spine.

    • 4

Hold the book so the spine is facing you, place the tape over the spine and smooth out any air bubbles. For hardcover books, wrap the tape around the spine's edge; cut off any excess for paperbacks if needed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Duct tape, masking tape or regular scotch tape isn't recommended, because it can discolor, rip and even become gooey.
