Natural fiber carpets are an earth-friendly option for homeowners who want a green home. They are made with sea grass, rushes and other grasses. These carpets have the advantage of being antistatic, according to Pioneer Thinking, which means they don't attract dirt. In fact, dirt just sits loosely in the weave. While it is relatively easy to remove dirt from grass carpets, care must be taken to avoid overwetting these carpets. Too much moisture can cause them to mildew and eventually fall apart.
Things You'll Need
- Clean, dry rag
- Liquid detergent
Blot up liquid spills immediately with a soft rag. Do not rub at the stain, as this can just drive the liquid deeper into the fibers, according to Sisal rugs. Dip the rag in club soda for tough spills, such as wine.
Scrub an old stain with a brush dipped in water mixed with a small amount of liquid detergent. Let the wet spot dry thoroughly before you move any furniture over the area.
Vacuum loose dirt and dust from your grass carpet using a brush attachment. Move the vacuum in several different directions to thoroughly cover the entire carpet.
Tips & Warnings
- Grass carpets should not be installed in damp areas, such as in a basement or on a porch.
- Never steam-clean a grass carpet or rug. This will wet the carpet too much and will encourage mold and mildew growth. Sea grass is especially susceptible to mold growth.
