How to Detect a Sony Handycam

How to Detect a Sony Handycam thumbnail
A Firewire cable is one type of connection for hooking up the Handycam to a computer.

The Sony Handycam is a brand of video camcorder available in standard or high definition. Handycams are designed to connect with a computer running a Windows operating system so you can download video recordings to the PC or laptop for editing. The computer must be installed with Sony Handycam software supplied on CD with the camcorder. Under normal operating, the software automatically detects the handycam when you connect it to a port on the computer, but you can still locate the camcorder connection manually.

    • 5

Double-click the Handycam icon to launch the communications software on the computer and work with the connected camcorder.

Tips & Warnings

  • If all attempts fail to detect the Handycam, disconnect the camcorder from the computer and reinstall the software on the CD supplied by Sony. Load the CD in the computer's disc tray, close the tray and wait a moment for the disc to start. Click each button as it appears on screen to move through the installation process, then restart your PC or laptop.
