Things You'll Need

  • Tall feathers

  • Tennis visor

  • Hot glue gun

  • Elastic

  • Straight pins

  • Beads

  • Fabric or lace

Ostrich and peacock feathers are the most common types of feathers for headdresses.

Showgirls are known for their fancy costumes and elaborate headdresses. A store-bought or custom-made headdress could cost you hundreds or thousands of dollars. If you are in need of a showgirl headdress for a costume party or theater performance, you can make your own headdress that looks just as fancy as the ones the real showgirls wear.

Step 1

Position the tennis visor so the visor part is sticking straight up. This will make the base for your headdress and will be worn like a headband.

Step 2

Glue a decorative piece of fabric or lace to the front of the visor with your hot glue gun.

Step 3

Stick straight pins into the edge of the visor to create points on the headdress. Use your hot glue gun to glue a string of small beads across the top edge of the visor and over the tops of the straight pins. The front of your headdress should resemble a crown.

Step 4

Turn the headdress around so the back of the visor is facing you. Glue a thin strip of elastic all the way across the visor, about 1/2-inch from the edge. Leave gaps large enough for the end of a feather to slide through and fit tight. Space the gaps 1/2-inch to 1-inch apart. The number of gaps you leave depends on the size of the feathers you are using.

Step 5

Glue another thin strip of elastic at the bottom of the visor. The gaps you make for the feathers should line up with the gaps at the top.

Step 6

Stick the feathers in the gaps in the elastic. The feathers should fit tight.

Step 7

Remove the feathers from the headdress when you are ready to store it away. Removing the feathers will keep them from getting damaged in storage and will also save space.

Tip

Use additional jewels, stones and sequins to decorate your headdress.

Warning

Take caution when using a hot glue gun to avoid injury.
