Homemade trout ball bait is a very popular form of bait for trout fisherman. This type of bait is available at many fishing supply stores, but most will state that the homemade variety is much more effective. Homemade trout ball bait is especially effective when fishing for rainbow trout. It is also a fun and personal experience to add to the joy of a long fishing trip.

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tbsp. garlic powder
  • 1/4 pound Velveeta cheese

Instructions

      Microwave the Velveeta cheese until it is thoroughly melted. Be sure to use a microwave-safe bowl.

      Mix all of the melted cheese with the water, flour, sugar, cornmeal and garlic powder in a large mixing bowl. Continue to mix until you have produced a heavy dough.

      Fill a second large pot half-full with water and bring it to a steady boil.

      Break off small pieces of the heavy dough and roll it into several small balls.

      Drop several balls at a time into the boiling water, allowing them to cook for 1 to 2 minutes at a time.

      Place the cooked balls on a paper towel and allow them to air-dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to properly size the dough balls so they are large enough to be placed on the hook but not so big that the fish cannot consume them.
