Planning the Party

1
Decide if you want to be the host. Sometimes home owners will ask a friend or family member to be the host of the party for them. If you have just moved into the house, you may not want to deal with planning a party. If this is the case, ask someone close to you if they would not mind taking care of everything for you.

2
Make up a guest list. If you do end up deciding to host, the first step is to write up a guest list. This is a good starting point because it will let you know how much food and how many invitations you will need.

Get your invitations ready. Store-bought invitations work nicely because all you have to do is fill out your information inside on the blanks. You can also get them in large packs for a decent price. However, if you are more crafty, you may decide to make your own invitations. A nice homemade invitation idea is to take a photo of you and your spouse outside of your home and put that on the front of the invitation. The inside of the card should contain date, time and driving directions. If you request a R.S.V..P, be sure to include a self-addressed envelope.

Pick a date and time. The location should always be your home, but the date and time are up to you. It is important to select a day of the week that most people are available. Saturday and Sunday are the best days. The time frame of the party should be open enough that people can come and go all day.

5
Plan your menu. Keep your party food simple. Make a lot of things that are easy and fast. You can also ask people to bring a dish to share. If you want to keep it very basic, hors d'oeuvres are a good way to go.
-
6
Decide if you want your party to be themed. If you have a house with a pool, a pool party theme might be a good idea. Early spring is a nice time for garden parties. If you decide to have a theme, try to plan activities that correspond with that theme. One possibility is that everyone could bring a flower to the garden party and plant it. You can specify what type of plants or flowers you want people to bring or you can let them select their own. Make sure you include the theme in the invitation, so people can dress and plan accordingly.
