How to Crochet a Half Granny Stitch Shawl

Select a yarn that will yield the weight and look you desire.

The half granny stitch shawl is a lacy triangular shawl, such as that worn by Caroline Ingalls, or Ma on "The Little House on the Prairie" television series. The shawl is light enough in design to add elegance to an outfit, but substantial enough for warmth on a cool evening. You can crochet it to any size and edge it with a simple or elaborate stitch or with fringe. The size of crochet hook and amount of yarn needed depend on the weight and size desired for the finished product.

Instructions

    • 1

Form a loop over your hook, crossing the yarn under the hook. Bring the working end of the yarn over the hook from back to front, forming a second loop. Hook the loop and pull it through the original loop on the hook, sliding the original off the hook. You have now created a slip knot on your hook.

    • 2

Work a chain stitch by wrapping the yarn from the back of the hook to the front forming a loop. (This is referred to as "yarn over.") Pull the new loop through the loop already on the hook, dropping the old loop off the end of the hook. Chain three more stitches this way.

    • 3

Form a ring by connecting the very first stitch to the stitch already on the hook using a slip stitch. To work a slip stitch, insert the hook into the first stitch you made, yarn over, and pull the new loop through both loops on the hook. All the stitches now form a loop.

    • 4

Chain four stitches. Form three double crochet stitches into the middle of the ring. To create one double crochet stitch, yarn over, insert the hook into the ring from front to back, yarn over, and pull the loop through the ring. Yarn over, and pull through two loops on the hook. Yarn over, and pull through the remaining two loops on the hook. Working three double crochet stitches in this pattern is called a shell.

    • 5

Crochet two chain stitches and shell in the ring. Chain stitch one and double crochet one more time in the ring. End this first row of the shawl by chain stitching four and turning your work to the back side.

    • 6

Shell in the first space created by the chain-one you just made in the previous row. Chain one stitch. Shell, chain two and shell again into the center space created by the chain-two in the previous row. Chain one stitch. Shell, chain one and work one double crochet into the final chain space. Chain four and turn the project. This is the second row.

    • 7

Shell and chain one into each chain-one space until you reach the center. Shell, chain two and shell again in the center space. Chain one and shell in each of the remaining chain-one spaces. End the last space by working an additional chain stitch and double crochet stitch. Chain four and turn the work.

    • 8

Repeat Step 7 until the triangular shawl has reached the size you want.

    • 9

Add an edge if you desire. A simple edge would be a single crochet stitch worked all the way around. To form a single crochet, insert the hook into a stitch on the edge of the shawl. Yarn over and pull the loop through the stitch. Yarn over and pull the loop through both loops on the hook. Repeat all the way around the shawl.
