How to Paint Letters on a Bike

Many bicycle and motorbike riders choose to customize their rides with new paint designs and insignias. Although it is recommended that a professional applies the paint to ensure it adheres correctly, it is possible to do so yourself. All you need is the paint, available at most garages, and a stencil. The stencil is easy to make if you have a computer and a printer. If not, stencils can be bought from craft shops and some garages.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a word-processing or publication program such as Photoshop, Word or Pages to create a stencil for your painting. You can create a stencil by typing in exaggerated; that is to say large, blocked, font, printing and then cutting out the lettering.

    • 2

Prepare the area of the bike you will paint by cleaning it well with warm water. Remove stubborn dirt with a little vinegar or other cleaning agent.

    • 3

Lay your stencil on the bike where you want to put the lettering. Secure the stencil in place with tape. Protect the surrounding area of the bike by wrapping tissue paper around the frame and secure with tape. Spray primer onto the stencil, holding the spray can at least 12 inches from the bike. Spray evenly until all the lettering has been primed. Allow primer to dry.

    • 4

Spray on the first coat of paint following the manufacturer's instructions. Apply a second coat after allowing the first coat to dry. Allow second coat to dry.

    • 5

Remove the stencil and tissue paper carefully once the paint has dried and admire your work.

Tips & Warnings

  • Varnish can be applied to the finished paint to protect it from scratches and weathering.

  • Always use spray paint in a well-ventilated area and follow the manufacturer's guidelines.
