How to Build a Bear Sweater

You can build a teddy bear sweater using a sewing machine.

An outfit for a teddy bear is something you can pay good money for at a boutique-style shop, or put together yourself at home to save costs. You can build your own teddy bear sweater using a few basic items like fleece fabric and a sewing machine. The fleece fabric makes for a cozy sweater out of a material that is easy to work with, and you can keep the sweater to use on your own stuffed bears or give it away as a gift for a young child.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the chest of the teddy bear, as well as the distance from the bear's shoulder to stomach. Also measure the length of the bear's arms and jot down the dimensions to use when creating the sweater panels.

    • 2

Draw the outline of a basic long-sleeve sweater onto a piece of fleece fabric. Make the width and length of the sweater, as well as the length of the arms, match the dimensions taken with the measuring tape, plus 1 inch for seam allowance.

    • 3

Cut out the drawn shape, then place the panel over a second piece of fleece fabric. Cut around this piece to make two matching sweater panels.

    • 4

Place the two pieces of fleece panel on top of one another and sew the edges together on the sewing machine. Leave the bottom open, as well as the neck hole and sleeve holes so the sweater can be put on and taken off the bear.

    • 5

Cut a 2-inch slit in the center top of the back of the sweater to create an opening, making it easier for the sweater to be pulled over the bear's head.

    • 6

Sew a shirt button at the top of one side of the slit. Cut a small hole opposite the button on the other side so the sweater can be buttoned up when placed on the bear.

Tips & Warnings

  • Let kids help choose and cut the fabric for the teddy bear.

  • Take care not to prick fingers when using the needle.
