How to Make the Perfect Gin Martini

A martini isn't just some chilled liquor in a fancy glass. The martini has a language all of its own. In addition to a choice in the base liquor, either vodka or gin, some other choices for a martini include "dirty" or "dry," "up" or "on the rocks," and with olives or a twist of lemon. Making the perfect martini doesn't require a highly skilled bartender or years of training in mixology; in fact, you can easily make one at home. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Shaker tin
  • Cocktail spoon
  • Strainer
  • Martini glass
  • Ice
  • Soda water
  • 2 oz. gin
  • 1/2 oz. dry vermouth
  • 1/2 oz. sweet vermouth
  • Pitted green olives
  • Cocktail sword or spear
  • Lemon twist

Instructions

    • 1

      Fill the martini glass with ice and soda water to chill it.

    • 2

      Fill the shaker tin with ice. Pour in the gin and vermouths. Stir with the cocktail spoon for about 10 to 15 seconds.

      Empty the contents of the martini glass. Strain the contents of the shaker tin into the glass.

      Garnish with either olives on a cocktail spear or sword or a lemon twist.
