DIY Billiard Cue Rack

Learn how to make a billiard cue rack.

Billiards is the collective name for games which involve shooting round balls across a felt-covered table using a long tapered stick called a cue. If you have your own gaming room that features any style of billiard table you will need to store your gaming equipment. You can build your own cue rack which will hold your racks in a vertical, secure position. This rack also features shelves for holding your billiard balls as well as a scoreboard for keeping track of the game.

Things You'll Need

  • Saw
  • Power drill
  • Router
  • Glue
  • Screws
  • 25 ½ inch-by-15 inch scoreboard

Instructions

    • 1

Cut out two pieces of wood that are 36 ¼ inches long and 5 ½ inches wide. These are the top and base piece of the rack.

    • 2

Drill four holes through the top piece of wood at each end so you end up with eight holes total. The holes should be 1 ¼ inches wide and arranged like the 4 side on a die. Drill the holes goes all the way through the wood.

    • 3

Make holes in the base piece of wood following the same pattern as the top piece. These holes should only go through half the thickness of the wood.

    • 4

Cut the two side pieces of the rack so they are 35 inches long and 3 ¾ inches wide. These pieces will stand up vertically between the top and base piece and hold up the shelves of the rack.

    • 5

Make shelves for the rack by cutting out four pieces of 25 ½ by 2 ½ inch wood. Cut a rounded groove down the middle of the shelves with the router so the groove is 1 inch wide and 3/8 inch deep in the middle.

    • 6

Set the base piece of wood on a work table with the drilled holes facing upward. Stand the side piece up on the base so they are centered and have 25 ½ inches of space between the insides of the pieces.

    • 7

Glue the sides to the base. Turn the rack over and secure the pieces together with a power drill and screws. Stand the rack back up and attach the top piece in the same way. Make sure the holes in the top and base are lined up before inserting the screws in the top.

    • 8

Fit the first shelf between the vertical sides with the groove facing upward and secure it from the sides with screws. The shelf should be 5 inches above the base.

    • 9

Attach the remaining shelves in the same way, leaving 5 inches between each one. Secure the scoreboard to the back of the rack just above the uppermost shelf.

    • 10

Round off the front corners of the base and top pieces to get rid of the pointy corners. Fill the screw holes with wood filler and sand the whole rack before staining or painting.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can adjust the sizes of the wood to make room for more cues or other modifications of your choice.

  • Don't use the rack to support heavy items or for standing on.
