How to Make a Luigi Costume

The character of Luigi first appeared in 1983 in the arcade video game "Mario Brothers." Luigi is a plumber by trade. Together with his fraternal twin brother, Mario, Luigi fights creatures in a series of fantasy lands and sewers in the Nintendo-owned franchise of video games, films and merchandise. Mario and Luigi costumes are viable last-minute Halloween or costume party disguises for two people, although Luigi, like his brother, is iconic enough that a solo costume is also possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a sheet of white craft felt on a flat surface. Use a compass to draw a circle on the white felt that measures 2 inches in diameter. Mark the circle using a felt tip marker.

    • 2

Cut the circle out. Flip the circle over, so any marker stains are on the wrong side of the fabric.

    • 3

Draw a thick, bold capital "L" shape on the white circle of felt with a black, felt-tipped marker. Position the L in the middle of the circle.

    • 4

Apply a small amount of hot glue to the back of the circle. Position the circle on the front of the hat, with the "L" facing forward. Center the circle on the front of the hat's fabric, not on the brim.

    • 5

Press the circle of felt to the fabric and hold for one to two minutes, allowing the glue time to set.

    • 6

Assemble the clothing for the costume. Obtain a green, long-sleeved t-shirt; blue-jean overalls; a green cabby hat; white gloves and brown boots.

    • 7

Don the t-shirt. Layer the overalls over the long-sleeved shirt. Fasten each strap over the shoulders, buttons facing forward. Pull the boots on; do not tuck the overalls into the boots.

    • 8

Affix the fake mustache to your upper lip just below your nose. Apply a dab of spirit gum, a costume adhesive, to the mustache. Allow the spirit gum to dry for the time period specified by the manufacturer or until the spirit gum feels tacky to the touch. Press the mustache to your face and hold until the spirit gum is dry.

    • 9

Put on the gloves for a finishing touch after the spirit gum has dried.

Tips & Warnings

  • The costume for Luigi's companion, Mario, is similar to Luigi's. Instead of a green hat and shirt, Mario wears a red costume. The letter on his hat is an "M" instead of an "L."

  • Search your own closet for possible costume components, or peruse a thrift store for suitable garments.
