Instructions for the GoWalking Sportline Pedometer

Pedometers have become an effective weight-loss tool, especially since doctors and experts recommend walking 10,000 steps per day to lose weight, according to the American College of Sports Medicine. Pedometers are small devices that you can clip onto your belt or waistband. When you walk or run, the pedometer will measure the number of steps you take with a fairly accurate reading. The Sportline GoWalking pedometer also tracks the number of calories you burn and the distance you have walked, and is an easy device to operate.

Things You'll Need

  • Comfortable walking or running shoes
  • Remove the plastic coating from the pedometer face. Slowly pull off the battery protector tab from the back of the pedometer.

  • Press the "reset" button and then the "mode" button to choose to measure your distance in either miles or kilometers. Press and hold the "reset" button for five seconds to set your choice.

  • Repeat Step 2 to choose between inches and centimeters for your stride setting and to choose between pounds and kilograms for your weight setting.

  • Determine your stride. Stand and mark a line on the ground in front of your toes. Walk 10 steps and mark a second line in front of your toes after your tenth step. Measure the distance between the two lines and divide it by 10 (steps). This is the length of your stride.

  • Input your stride length by pressing the "mode" button until the display reads "DIS." Press the "set" button until you see the number that corresponds to your stride length. Press the "mode" button to set the number.

  • Set the calorie counter by imputing your weight. Press the "mode" button until the display reads "KCAL." Press the "set" button until you see the number that corresponds with your weight. Press the "mode" button to set your weight.

  • Set the pedometer clock. Press the "mode" button until the display reads "clock." The display will flash. Continue pressing the "reset" button until you see the number that corresponds with the current hour. Continue pressing the "set" button until you see the number that corresponds with the current minutes. Press the "mode" button to set the time.

  • Close the pedometer case and clip it to your belt or waistband just above your hip. Make certain the pedometer is sitting horizontally because if it sits on an angle, it can give a false reading.

  • Press the "reset" button for two seconds until the display shows "0." This will reset any previous measurements taken by the pedometer.

  • Begin walking normally.

  • Press the "mode" button to see your different measurements (steps, distance, calories).

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are a new exerciser, begin by taking shorter walks and work your way up to taking 10,000 steps per day.
