How to Apply for a Scholarship in Florida
If you live in Florida or are planning on attending a college or university in the Sunshine state, you may qualify for a scholarship. Scholarships are available in varying amounts, up to complete tuition. In Florida, you will find schools that offer their own scholarships as well as stand-alone scholarship programs that allow you to use an awarded scholarship at any college or university of your choosing. Typically there are no fees associated with applying for a scholarship in Florida.

Complete the FAFSA online (see Resources). Your most recent tax return is needed to fill out the online FAFSA form. On the form, have the results sent to the colleges in Florida in which you are interested. If you are only completing an application for a stand-alone scholarship not associated with a college, a completed FAFSA is not required.

Review your student aid report (SAR), which is compiled after you have submitted your FAFSA. The SAR uses the financial data you entered on the application to assess how much you can contribute to your college education. College financial aid offices look at that amount and compare it to the tuition to see what the difference is, which determines your need.

Wait for your financial aid package to arrive by mail from the colleges to which you have applied. The package will have used your SAR to come up with any scholarships for which you may automatically qualify. Contact the financial aid office to inquire about applications for scholarships at the school. Sometimes the financial aid award packet will only include grants and loans, which means you need to secure applications from the aid office to apply for the scholarships that the school offers.

Complete the scholarship applications you have secured. Typically you need to include your name, address, school attended, GPA, standardized test scores and any community organizations or clubs of which you are a member. Depending on the scholarship, you may also need to supply letters of recommendation and an essay.
