How to Make an Indian Headdress

A real Indian headdress can be elaborate and beautiful.

Dressing your kids up like Indian chiefs or braves does not have to cost an arm and a leg. The more realistic you want to be, the more you will spend on materials, but for many kids, a simple headress is just the ticket for that game of cowboys and Indians.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a strip of construction paper in any color to fit your child's head. The strip should be about two inches wide.

    • 2

Select feathers in different colors, and arrange them with the quill ends along the inside of your cardboard strip. Fake feathers can be purchased at craft stores. The largest feathers should be in the center of the headband and shrink in size to either end.

    • 3

Glue or tape the feathers to the headband. You may use as many or as few feathers as you like. Braves often wore a single feather on the side, while chiefs' headdresses were far more elaborate.

    • 4

Fit the headdress to your child's head, and fasten the ends together with tape or glue.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not have crafting feathers on hand, draw and cut them out using different colors of construction paper. Use crayons or markers to decorate them.
