How to Write Your Own Popup Book

Writing your own pop-up book may seem challenging. With a little imagination and few simple supplies, however, you can write a pop-up book all your own. You first want to come up with a story that is basic and easy for young children to follow. Then create characters and artwork to go along with the story. When you are done, you will have a pop-up book to share with your entire family.

Instructions

  1. Writing the Story

    • 1

Choose a story to tell. Make the story a simple, strait-forward one that you can write using a basic vocabulary. Examples include a trip to the zoo, a ride in an airplane or a nutrition guide.

    • 2

Write the story. Plan what each page is going to say, but keep it short and to the point. Remember that you have pictures on every page that help to tell your story, so a lot of words are not necessary.

    • 3

Choose pictures to go on each page. Before putting the book together, decide what picture will be on each page to go along with the story.

    Creating the Covers

    • 4

Measure your covers. Use a piece of cardstock and trace around it on the cardboard. Make two outlines, one for each cover, and cut them out.

    • 5

Glue the cardboard to the card stock. Use a spray adhesive to bind the two together.

    • 6

Starch your fabric. The starch makes your fabric stiff so that it is easier to cut and crease.

    • 7

Cut your fabric. You want to cut your fabric about a half-inch wider than your covers on all sides. This way you can fold the edges inside the covers.

    • 8

Glue the fabric to the covers. Use spray adhesive on the cardboard side of your covers to glue the fabric down evenly. Once the adhesive dries, use markers and paint to decorate the cover.

    • 9

Glue the edges of the fabric. Snip all the corners of your fabric at an angle and then fold the sides inside the covers. Use white glue to bond the fabric to the inside of your cover.

    Creating the Inside

    • 10

Draw your pictures on cardstock. Make them a size that fits the page of your book and create a tab at the bottom of each picture.

    • 11

Cut out your pictures once you have your pictures detailed and colored the way you want.

    • 12

Glue pictures onto the pages. Fold the tab at the bottom of your drawing so that it stands up on the page when glued down. Let each picture dry completely before folding it over.

    • 13

Write your story in the book after each picture dries.

    • 14

Bind the book together. Spread a half-inch strip of white glue along the left hand side of each page and glue the pages together one by one. Use the same technique to attach the pages to the covers. Allow the glue to dry completely before opening the book.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are not much of an artist, go onto the Internet and find clip art for the pictures in your book. Just print them out onto the cardstock and then cut them out.
