How to Make a Recycled Wine Bottle Serving Tray

How to Make a Recycled Wine Bottle Serving Tray thumbnail
Slump similar weight wine bottles to create a wine bottle serving tray.

The process of recycling wine bottles and creating a serving tray uses the process of slumping. Slumping glass bottles uses a mold to hold the bottles and a kiln that reaches 1,100 to 1,700 degrees Fahrenheit. The bottles melt in the high temperature and conform to the mold to create a serving tray. Select bottles that are of the same glass weight and thickness. The consistency in glass weight creates a uniform thickness throughout the serving tray.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the wine bottles thoroughly with soap and water. Dry with a soft cloth.

    • 2

Sit the glass slumping serving tray mold on a flat surface. Lay a piece of high temperature fiber paper over the surface of the serving tray mold.

    • 3

Lay the wine bottles on their sides. Place the wine bottles next to each other on the serving tray mold. Use as many wine bottles as necessary to cover the surface of the mold.

    • 4

Place a sheet of high temperature fiber paper over the surface of the refractory shelf in the kiln large enough to extend past the edges of the serving tray mold by 3 inches. Sit the serving tray mold on the center of the high temperature fiber paper.

    • 5

Set the kiln to fire to 1,450 to 1,550 degrees Fahrenheit or 788 to 843 Celsius to join the glass bottles together. Allow the kiln to cool completely before removing the mold.

    • 6

Separate the slumped glass wine bottle serving tray from the mold. Remove the high temperature fiber paper from the bottom of the tray.
