How to Make Button Hair Snap Clips

Hair clips can be made for formal occasions, casual vacations and anything in between.

Fashionable hair accessories are always popular, but they can cost $10 or more to purchase, if you can even find ones you like. With a few supplies and a bit of time, you can make your own hair clips for a fraction of that cost. Using your favorite colors and specific decorations, making your own hair clips allows you to customize and really let your personality shine through. This is also an excellent way to use leftover craft supplies from other activities.

Things You'll Need

• Plain metal snap clips (30mm to 80mm, depending on your desired size)
• Decorative buttons of different sizes
• Thread
• Needle
• Scissors
• Hot glue gun
• Hot glue sticks

Instructions

Prepare Your Decorations

1. 

   Which buttons you choose will really set the tone for the sort of clip you create.

   Choose the button or buttons you want to use to decorate your snap clip. For stacked buttons, you will want one button that is larger than the others.

2. Choose a thread color that coordinates with your selected buttons. Thread your needle with this thread and tie a knot in the end of the thread big enough to keep the thread from pulling through the hole of the buttons.

3. Run your thread through your button(s) from the back to the front. If your buttons are stacked, run the thread through both buttons. Run the thread through the back in the opposite hole. Repeat this process so you have thread running through the holes two to three times. Tie off your thread on the back of the button.

Assembling Your Clip

1. 

   Using a glue that is slightly flexible after cooling will help your buttons stay firmly attached to your clip.

   Bring your glue gun and hot glue to temperature.

2. Select a snap clip and open it by pressing in the center of the clip while holding the ends.

3. Apply a dot of glue to the top portion of the snap clip where you will place your decoration, then place your button on the glue. Hold the button in place until glue has started to set, approximately 10 seconds. If you are stacking buttons that do not have holes for thread, place a dot of glue on the bottom button, and then place the smaller button on top. Be careful not to apply to much glue or it will press out between the two buttons. For

4. Leave the clip open and do not move the button until the glue has completely dried and set. Once set, your clip is ready for use.

Tips & Warnings

• Use your creativity and imagination in decorating your clips.

• Making yo-yos or fabric-covered buttons from scrap fabric, bows from ribbon, collections of jewelry findings, and the like can make beautiful and one-of-a-kind additions to your hair accessories.

• Be certain to use only items that are appropriate to the age of the person who will wear the clip. Young children should not be given clips with buttons or other choking hazards, no matter how strongly you believe they are attached to the clip.

• Be careful to avoid touching the heated portions of your hot glue gun. Glue guns can cause burns.
