Directions for Drawing Bugs
Entomology, also known as the scientific study of insects, can be a fun and interesting hobby for kids and grown-ups alike. Entomologists collect bugs to study their behavior, appearances and habitats and make notes about how and where different sorts of bugs live. If you are not able to collect bugs, either because your parents will not let you or because your favorite bugs live in far away regions, learn how to draw them and their habitats instead. Drawing bugs is easy once you get the hang of it and will allow you to collect images of exotic species that live all over the world.

1
Collect pictures of bugs you want to draw. It is much easier to draw from a picture than it is to draw from life. Try to find the largest pictures that you can so that the details of the bugs' bodies are easy for you to see. You can find pictures online or in nature magazines such as "National Geographic." You might even be able to find photos in your science textbook from school.
-
2
Draw a graph with 1/4-inch squares lightly in pencil over the picture of the bug you want to draw. Use your ruler to make sure the lines are straight.

3
Draw a graph lightly in pencil on your paper. You can draw a 1/4-inch graph if you want to copy the picture exactly, or you can draw a 1-inch graph if you want to make it bigger. Do not press too hard with the pencil because you will be erasing this graph later.
-
4
Copy the picture of the bug, square by square, from the photograph onto your paper. Instead of looking at the picture as a whole picture of a bug at this stage, focus on the lines in each square as though they are an abstract design you are copying. It should be easy for you to judge where to place your lines within the frame of each square. Start with light pencil lines in case you make a mistake you need to erase.
-
5
Draw over your insect with a darker line once you have the whole picture copied.
-
6
Erase all of the lines from the graph gently. Make sure not to smear your bug drawing or to scratch the surface of your paper.
-
7
Color your bug in with your coloring pencils. You can copy the colors from the original picture or use your imagination and make your bug more colorful.
