Wash and core the tomato that you will be slicing. Core the tomato by making a small cut around the perimeter of the core at the top to remove any inedible stem and core.
-
2
Place the tomato on the cutting board on its side with the core ends not touching any surface; hold it in place so that it does not roll off.

-
3
Place the handheld tomato slicer on the top surface of the tomato so that the blade is parallel with the core. Hold the tomato with your thumb and index finger where it touches the cutting board.
-
4
Firmly press through the tomato with short back and forth motions to allow the serrated edges to assist in cutting through the tomato. Move your hand away from the bottom and to the top of the tomato when you get about half way through the tomato.

Tips & Warnings
Do not refrigerate tomatoes until they are ripe.
To ripen tomatoes, place them in a paper bag with the stems up. Fold the bag at the top and ventilate it with four to six holes.
Cut tomatoes at room temperature.
Tomatoes that are overripe will be much more difficult to cut because they will give under the pressure of the knife.
Move your hand out of the way of the tomato slicer as soon as there is ample room at the top -- about half the tomato -- to avoid cutting yourself.
Wash the tomato slicer after use to avoid cross contamination for the next use.
