Instructions

    • 1

Mix the cake batter following the directions on the boxes of cake mix. Pour the batter into two square 9-by-13-inch cake pans and bake as directed. Once the cakes are completely baked, remove them from the oven and let them set for 15 minutes. Loosen the edges of the cake from the pan with a spatula and flip the pans upside down on a cake platter. Let the cakes sit for another 15 minutes.

Place the cakes next to each other so the edges touch and you have one long cake. Take a spoonful of frosting and spread it along the touching edges to help hold the cake together. Using a tube of frosting, draw the outline of a fish on the top of the cake. Use a knife to cut along the design so you are left with a fish-shaped cake. Discard the excess pieces of cake.

Mix small cups of frosting with food coloring to create different colors for your fish. Light blue is a good color for the fish body. Frost the entire cake with one solid lighter color, then use darker colors to make the eyes, scales and fins. You can use a spatula to create scale-like designs in the frosting. You can also decorate with blue or silver cake glitter. You can even decorate the cake pan with items such as fishing lures, packets of fish hooks, or sea shells. Another creative idea is to drape a fish net on the cake platter around the base of the cake.
