Animals are an excellent inspiration for themed birthday parties.

Children and adults of all ages love themed birthday parties. Rather than getting inspiration from a favorite television show or movie, many people turn to nature -- specifically animals -- to create a perfect party. Dr. Doolittle himself would be proud to host a safari-themed party with a black-and-white zebra-striped cake taking center stage at the celebration. Creating a cake with zebra stripes can be easily accomplished using black-and-white icing along with a pinch of patience. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Bake a cake using your favorite recipe or box variety. Remove the cake from the baking pan, place it on a wire rack and allow it to cool completely.

    • 2

Combine 4 cups of powdered sugar, 1 cup of vegetable shortening, 1 1/2 tbsp. of water and 1 tsp. of clear vanilla extract in a large bowl. Beat the mixture on the medium-speed setting for five minutes. Set the icing aside.

    • 3

Make another round of icing in a separate bowl using the same recipe, except add several drops of black food coloring to the mixture.

    • 4

Brush all of the loose crumbs off the top and sides of the cake. Frost the entire cake with a spatula using the black icing.

    • 5

Dip the spatula in hot water and run it over the top of the icing. This action will give the frosting a smooth look. Allow the cake with black icing to set, at least one hour.

    • 6

Fill a piping bag with the white frosting. Place a picture of a zebra close by to refer to while frosting the cake.

    • 7

Carefully squeeze the piping bag as you move it over the top of the cake to make an outline of a zebra stripe. Fill in the stripe with the white icing.

    • 8

Repeat and remember that not all zebra stripes are the same, so create a variety of sizes and shapes. Smooth the stripes with a spatula dipped in hot water.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't have a piping bag, fill a 1-gallon plastic bag with the white icing and cut the corner off.

  • Black food coloring can be found in specialty stores and online.

  • Black icing can stain, so take precautions to keep your counter and clothing safe.

  • Add facial features over the stripes, including the zebra's eyes, nose and mouth.

  • As alternative to cake, decorate a giant cookie with zebra stripes.
