Choose the tuxedo style and color. Traditionally, tuxedos are black or navy blue in color. They are not white or baby blue. A suit that has tails on the jacket is not a tuxedo, it is a morning suit. This is because the morning suit was worn during the day, and a tuxedo was for nighttime affairs only.

Make sure the jacket has satin or silk on the lapels. The trousers will also have a silk or satin stripe on the outer seam of each leg. Trousers are straight legged, and do not have cuffs. Do not wear a belt with a tuxedo, as the trousers should not have belt loops. Wear formal suspenders instead.

Do wear a white shirt with a tuxedo. The shirt should have little to no detail to it, although small pleats are permissible. The front of the shirt may or may not have buttons, as sometimes studs are used instead. Cuff links are used in place of buttons. This style of cuff without buttons is known as a French cuff.

Wear a hand-tied bow tie with a tuxedo. A bow tie that is pre-tied and hooked together does not look as sophisticated as the rest of the suit. There is no secret to tying a bow tie, it just takes some practice. Check the links below for a tutorial in tying a bow tie.

Wear a cummerbund with the tuxedo, as it hides the area where the shirt is tucked into the trousers. While cummerbunds are offered in a wide variety of colors, black is elegant and will always match the rest of the suit.
