How to Bake in a Gas Grill

Keep your kitchen cool in the summer by baking outdoors on your gas grill. Since the temperature on a gas grill can be set precisely, it acts as an oven when closed. Even bread and cake can be baked on a gas grill without needing any special accessories or special recipes. A gas grill is preferable for baking over a charcoal grill because of the temperature control and because it doesn't impart a smoky flavor to the baked goods. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Preheat the grill to the temperature called for in the recipe; most gas grills have temperature dials and a built-in thermometer. Place prepared dough or batter into a loaf or cake pan.

    • 2

Lay aluminum foil over the main grill surface. Place a cookie sheet on the highest grill surface possible. If your grill has only one grill surface over the coals, place an inverted baking pan under the cookie sheet to raise it.

    • 3

Place the bread or cake pan on top of the cookie sheet. Close the grill's lid.

    • 4

Set the timer according to the recipe's baking time.

    • 5

Check the baked goods when there is about 10 minutes left on the timer. If the bread or cake appears to be baking unevenly, turn the pan. Close the lid and check again when there is about five minutes left on the timer.

    • 6

When the baked goods are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean, remove it from the grill and set on a cooling rack.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cooking times and temperature may need to be adjusted a bit to get the best result.

  • Casseroles, pizzas and other recipes also can be baked in a gas grill.
