How to Use a Carrier to Trap a Cat

How to Use a Carrier to Trap a Cat thumbnail
You can trap a feral or domesticated cat in a cat carrier.

Most cats, feral or not, are reluctant to go inside strange spaces without some prodding. Catching cats with cat carriers can be a tedious process, but it can be done. With incentives such as food rewards and with having regular contact with the cat, trapping it in a carrier is possible.

Things You'll Need

  • Cat carrier
  • Wet cat food or canned fish such as tuna
  • Water and bowl

Instructions

    • 1

Place the cat carrier in an area frequented by the cat.

    • 2

Place food and water inside the carrier, all the way to the back.

    • 3

      Leave the carrier door open.

    • 4

Spend time in that area yourself and let the cat see you there. Over time, this will make the cat less nervous in your company.

    • 5

Wait patiently by the carrier until the cat goes inside for the food. Close the door rapidly to prevent escape.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are trying to herd your own cat into a carrier, catnip or its favorite toy can also be placed inside as an incentive.
