How to Properly Align a Golf Club Grip on a Shaft
Replacing the grips on your golf clubs is an essential part of maintaining your golf equipment. The grip along your club's shaft allow you hold the club correctly and securely, which can improve your swing overall. Failing to replace these grips when they loosen or wear out can have a negative effect on your golf game. Fortunately, properly aligning and replacing golf club grips is a straightforward process.
Things You'll Need
- Utility knife
- Golf grip
- Double-sided masking tape
- Grip solvent
- Work bench vise
- Cleaning solvent
Instructions
-
-
1
Place your club in a work bench vise so that the grip you'll be replacing is accessible.
-
2
Use a utility knife to carefully cut the old grip. Cut toward the end of the golf club, away from your body.
-
-
3
Peel off your old grip. Clean the shaft with proper cleaning solvent and dry it off afterward.
-
4
Wrap double-sided masking tape down the length of the shaft, covering the same area the old grip tape occupied.
-
5
Pour grip solvent over the tape.
-
6
Slide the new grip on.
-
7
Verify that the grip is straight and is entirely over the shaft's grip area. The grip should have an alignment pattern that is square with the clubface: if it isn't square, you can adjust the grip as needed for a few minutes before the solvent sets.

Allow the new grip to dry for at least three hours.
