How to Raise the FPS on a P90 Airsoft
The P90 Airsoft gun is a replica of a real weapon, but uses a spring to fire projectiles. You can increase the FPS (feet per second) velocity of the projectiles being shot by swapping the original spring for one that will provide more power when compressed. You can find the spring at a hobby store or hardware store--its size dictated by the physical dimensions available inside the P90's piston chamber. The procedure to swap the original spring for the replacement spring is straightforward, since Airsoft guns are designed to be disassembled for cleaning, and requires a few tools that are commonplace.
Things You'll Need
- Phillips screwdriver
- Flat-edged screwdriver
- Needle-nose pliers
- Replacement Airsoft spring
Instructions

1
Pull the magazine clip out of the butt of the P90 Airsoft gun. Set the magazine clip aside.
-
2
Remove the screw from each of the cocking handles--there is one on each side of the gun--with the Phillips screwdriver. Pull the cocking handles forward and off the gun.
-
-
3
Remove all 16 of the screws from the right side of the gun with the Phillips screwdriver. Place the screws in a dish so they don't get lost.
-
4
Place the gun on its side with the barrel facing left. Place the tip of the flat-edged screwdriver into the seam between the two halves of the gun, starting at the tip of the barrel. Push the tip down the side of the gun and across to the right side. Remove the screwdriver. Repeat this procedure, starting at the top left corner of the gun and finishing at the upper right corner. Repeat this procedure at the back of the gun, starting at the upper right corner and moving down to the lower right corner.
-
5
Pull the plate off the gun. Place this plate, which has all of the components inside it, on the table with the parts facing up. Pull the flash holder off the grooves holding it inside the gun--the flash holder resembles a tube that is unlike any of the other components.
-
6
Remove the inner flash holder that is revealed once the flash holder is removed.
-
7
Remove the battery compartment door that is at the bottom right of the plate. Remove the two metal weights that are wedged into grooves in the plate--the tip of the flat-edged screwdriver can be used to loosen the weights so you can pull them out.
-
8
Locate the trigger assembly near the center bottom of the plate--a spring is featured here that makes the assembly stand out. Pull the safety pin out of the bottom left of the assembly with your fingers. Pull the trigger off the assembly. Pull the electronic switch out of the assembly. Lift the gearbox out of the assembly.
-
9
Grip one end of the spring in the assembly with the jaws of a needle-nose pliers. Pull the end of the spring off the rod holding it on the assembly. Repeat this procedure with the other end of the spring. Pull the spring out and discard it. Insert the replacement spring into the assembly so that it occupies the position that the original spring did. Push down on each end of the spring to ensure that it is secured to the rods on the assembly.
-
10
Place the gearbox into the assembly so that it occupies the position it originally did. Do the same with the trigger and safety pin. Place the weights and battery compartment door back in as they were before. Reverse the procedure to reassemble the two plates of the P90 together. Insert the magazine clip into the butt of the gun.
